Founded in 1946 by Bernard Rudofsky

Bernardo originally debuted in April 1946 as a sandal collection founded by world-famous architect, philosopher, and designer Bernard Rudofsky, whose disciplines spanned architecture, photography, fashion, art, and design. His creations immediately garnered praise from the era’s leading fashion publications — such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, the latter of which credited Rudofsky with inventing the “modern sandal.” They were seen on the feet of its celebrities, ranging from Jane Birkin to Jackie Kennedy.

Over 75 years later, Bernardo designs propose essential yet expressive shoes that carry its wearers around the globe, promoting exploration and experimentation.

All of our shoes are handcrafted in Brazil at a family-run factory. Whenever possible we use locally sourced and recycled materials.
