Credit television. Love Story, which premiered February 12 on FX and Hulu, follows Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and John F. Kennedy Jr., with Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn and Naomi Watts as Jackie Kennedy. The series sent a new generation looking for Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s style: the slip dress, the crisp white shirt, the camel coat, the hair pulled back without fuss. The look was never about logos. It was about proportion, a narrow palette, and very good fabric.
There’s a family footnote, too. Jackie Kennedy wore Bernardo in the decades after 1946 and reportedly owned the sandal in 16 colors. Carolyn’s wardrobe was her own, and we claim no part of it. We simply recognize the instinct.
What Makes an Outfit ’90s Minimalist?
Three rules. Keep the palette to black, white, camel, and gray, with one brown if you must. Choose cut over decoration: a bias-cut skirt, a straight trouser, a sweater that fits close. And let the shoes finish the line instead of interrupting it. A low heel, a narrow silhouette, a clean upper. Nothing that needs explaining.

The question comes up every fall, and the answer depends on the hour. In daylight, wear a loafer or a flat and let a chunky knit balance the silk. After dark, switch to a kitten heel, which keeps the skirt from reading like a nightgown and keeps you walking. In real cold, a knee-high boot under a midi hem covers the gap and turns the look into a winter one.

How to Wear It Without Looking Like a Costume
Revivals go wrong when they turn literal. Leave the tiny sunglasses and the headband in 1997, unless you wore them the first time. Mix one ’90s piece with what you already own: a slip skirt with your oversized sweater, a long black coat over the jeans you wear every week. Keep the shoes current and the tailoring sharp.
Minimalism was never about looking a certain age. It was about looking like yourself, with less in the way. Modern, not trendy, which is a rule worth keeping long after this revival moves on.
